With as many vegans in the United States as there are people in Los Angeles County, according to PETA, it’s not surprising that the Boston-area has a vegan community of its own. In Allston, “vegan row” is becoming more developed, as it is now the home to Peace O’ Pie, Grasshopper, Deep Ellum—which offers vegan options—and most recently, FoMu alternative ice cream.

Located at 481 Cambridge St., FoMu—think “faux moo”—has a creative selection of coconut cream base ice cream, all of which is sweetened with raw sugar or agave. The commissary has been open since June, and according to co-owner Deena Tang, they see anywhere from 200 to 2000 customers a day, depending on the season.

“Allston has been a great home for FoMu. Aside from our wonderful neighbors, it has proven to be a diverse, open-minded, and fun place to establish a name,” said Tang. “We are locals- so we might be biased- but we love the community. From our artwork to where we source our products, we try to support it in any way possible.”

Servings range from $3.75 to $6.95, and their flavors are far from bland. According to Hang, customer favorites are salted caramel, cookies and cream, cardamom pistachio, and cherry amaretto. Other flavors include avocado, thai peanut and rice honey lavender.

Neither Tang nor her husband Hin are vegan, but she said they saw a need for it in Boston.

“Unfortunately, many of our friends and family couldn’t enjoy our amazing creations due to dietary preferences and allergies,” Tang said. “The more we looked into it, it actually seemed to be an unmet need in Boston!”
